14 Great Questions To Ask When Designing A Food App
Recently I interviewed two avid foodies what they look for when ordering food from an app online or what they would wish an app would have when ordering food online this was their replies.
I also would like to thank the two people who helped make this blog post possible by adding their feedback to my questions you are both fantastic!!!
How often do you order food or go out to a restaurant to eat? Rather than installing uber eats to see the interface and layout; I have never tried ordering food via any online platform after reaching Canada. Back in India, I prefer to go out to a restaurant to eat. Apart from food, what attracts me is the ambiance of the restaurant. I believe eating food at a beautiful place, is as important as how good it tastes.
If you have not used a food ordering app in the past then why have you not used one?
The reason why I haven’t used any food ordering app is that most of the local restaurants in my country which serves excellent food don’t have this facility. So I’m left with no other option than to visit the restaurant.
What food ordering apps have you used in the past? I remember using an online website once for ordering pizza for a birthday party in my office.
How easy is it to use and figure out the app? As a person who is using it for the first time found it very convenient and comfortable. Especially for trying new dishes. I found add/removing food items a handy feature so that it fit my budget.
What do you look for most in a food app and why? I would appreciate having more information about the dishes(including pictures, ingredients) and the way of cooking. And I would look for options to compare the same recipe from various restaurants for better value under a similar price tag. Also will look for opportunities such as tracking orders; secure payment and restaurant filtering based on delivery time, price etc.
What is your favorite type of foods or what foods would you like to try? My favorites are Arabian dishes, especially grilled meat. I would like to try Italian and Mexican dishes like pizza, tacos.
Would you find a language translation feature in a food ordering app useful? Depends. The language translation feature can be beneficial especially in a multi-cultural society like Ontario.
Would you find a video tour of the restaurant your ordering from or a video of how the team prepares their foods helpful when placing an order on a food app? I would love it. The more I know about the preparation of the food, better the chances I make a right decision while ordering.
How do you feel about customer rewards features examples using this app five times in a row and get free delivery on your next order, or get a free meal valued at $20 when you use this app 15 times in one month, etc?
Rather than a customer rewards feature; they should introduce something like a subscription fee for regular customers. So customers can make unlimited free delivery orders after a limit.
Is the app fast and load quickly enough? I find uber eats fast and easy. "Though I haven’t ordered any food yet."
Does the app crash, hang or freeze? Works fine for filtering and exploring options. To check out my first order.
Does the app look cool? I find it refreshing and straightforward. Easy to navigate and place orders. I feel it has a ‘not make me think design’.
Do you want to come back for more? Of course, I want to.
Is the app accurate when locating your address to order food? Yes, it is entirely accurate.
How often do you order food or go out to a restaurant to eat?
I haven’t ordered food since the time I have arrived in Toronto as the apartment I live; the intercom doesn’t work so there is no way these people can contact me if I order food and the shitty part about Canada are that they don’t really call on your phone when they arrive. Or that’s what I have heard. Hence, I haven’t ordered food in Canada so far. But if it isn’t like that, then I would love to order because I end up eating some junk all the time. I don’t go to restaurants often because I feel it’s such a waste of time waiting for my food sitting at a table. I only tend to go to restaurants on the weekends to chill with family or friends.
If you have not used a food ordering app in the past than why have you not used one?
I have used Food Panda; Uber eats, Zomato, Swiggy and Fresh menu (last two are Indian) before.
What food ordering apps have you used in the past? Same as above
How easy is it to use and figure out the app?
Food Panda is a little confusing and I don’t like it so much because they have set a minimum order of $25 (approx 25 CAD) and that sucked because if I am ordering it for myself, then I won’t be ordering food for that much unless I order it from an expensive restaurant. But Uber Eats, Swiggy and Zomato are pretty nice to order food. The navigation isn’t that difficult to understand. Fresh Menu is more like a kitchen where they have a different mWhat do you look for most in a food app and why?Honestly, Cheap food from a good restaurant that maintains good hygiene.menu every day and you can order whatever you want from there. I like Fresh menu the best in India.
What is your favorite type of foods or what foods would you like to try?
I usually end up ordering Chinese food as that is one of my favorite cuisines but occasionally I order Mexican or Indian Food. Also, I don’t like Seafood and most of the restaurants have seafood in them. So I have/ had a tough time ordering food without any seafood because sometimes they put Shrimp powder or paste or even fish eggs in some of the Chinese food even when you mention that you want it to be completely vegetarian.
Would you find a language translation feature in a food ordering app useful? Depends on what you are ordering. But I prefer English.
Would you find a video tour of the restaurant your ordering from or a video of how the team prepares their foods helpful when placing an order on a food app?
Definitely. I am very concerned about how my food is being prepared and how the quality of the restaurant is. It is challenging to judge that part if the restaurant I am ordering from is someplace I have never been physical. Hence, I only order food from restaurant’s I have visited before. But a video tour or pictures of the kitchen will be beneficial in trying out new places.
How do you feel about customer rewards features examples using this app five times in a row and get a free delivery on your next order, or get a free meal valued at $20 when you use this app 15 times in one month, etc.?
I would use an app that gives me reward points or free delivery. I love offers.
Is the app fast and load quickly enough?
Mostly yes, but sometimes Uber Eats used to crash on my phone.
Does the app crash, hang or freeze?
Same as above.
Does the app look cool?
I love the interface of Uber, Its clean, simple and accessible. But in the dark, it’s a pain sometimes if you don’t have adaptable brightness on your phone because the screen is entirely white and bright.
Do you want to come back and use the app for more?
Yes, I would.
