What are Carbon Nanotubes?

Carbon nanotubes are large molecules of pure carbon that are long and thin and shaped like tubes, about 1-3 nanometers (1 nm = 1 billionth of a meter) in diameter, and hundreds to thousands of nanometers long. As individual molecules, nanotubes are 100 times stronger-than-steel and one-sixth its weight. Some carbon nanotubes can be extremely efficient conductors of electricity and heat; depending on their configuration, some act as semiconductors.

So why I could find no companies using carbon nanotubes outright, I did see a lot of sectors that are looking to integrate this very new piece of technology into their sectors and industries. The first sectors to be looking at integrating carbon nanotubes are as follows.

Space Exploration Development

Now while in the video he mentions lots of companies already using Carbon Nanotubes I couldn’t find any definitively in my research, however, the use of these Nanotubes in the works of space exploration and development does seriously mean something.

Energy management, Production and Harvesting

Currently, the world's population sits at over 7.6 billion people. So it is no surprise that the demand for clean, renewable energy has never been higher. That is why various energy production companies and governments are funding studies into the power of Carbon Nanotubes and their ability to harvest energy from the ocean surface and the ability even to produce electrical currents within themselves.

Medical technology sector using them as drug delivery systems to treat cancer

We are living longer and longer the fears of past diseases that we used to consider life-threatening are slowly but surely becoming a fear of the past. It is thanks to medical research centers and studies like the above mentioned in the video that we can live longer healthier lives.

Environmental Pollution Reduction & Waste Management

As our population grows so does our waste and more specifically to our subject so does our liquid waste and water pollution. However, cleaning environmental waste disasters can take a great deal of time and impact the natural landscapes and ecosystems for years causing long-lasting environmental damage lasting lifetimes. However, using Carbon Nanotubes, we can greatly reduce the cleanup time and damage regarding oil spills using Carbon Nanotube sponges.

Conclusion

Considering this is still new technology many companies are still in the conducting and human, environmental and risk management testing before backing Carbon Nanotubes and adopting them into their marketplaces. However once these studies are concluded, and the safety tests past it will be a short amount of time before we see countless companies lining up around the corner to get their hands on these nifty little wonders.
